CHAPTER - 8

AUTHOR'S POV

The car glided smoothly along the winding road, sunlight spilling across the desert plains as the palace disappeared behind them.

For a long while, neither of them spoke. The only sound was the low hum of the engine and the soft rustle of Arisha’s dupatta brushing against her arm.

Arisha broke the silence first, her tone light but layered with curiosity.

“So… where exactly are we going, Your Majesty?”

Her words carried a hint of mockery, but Yugant didn’t rise to the bait. His eyes remained fixed on the road ahead.

“Somewhere away from rules, rituals, and eyes that only judge.”

Arisha raised a brow, glancing sideways at him. “You mean your palace?”

A faint smirk curved his lips. “You’re quick.”

“I’m observant,” she countered, folding her hands in her lap. “You like control, don’t you? Even silence obeys you.”

He spared her a brief glance, those sharp, assessing eyes that saw too much. “Control isn’t about force. It’s about presence. People fall in line when they know who leads.”

Arisha tilted her head slightly, her gaze softening but her tone teasing. “And what if someone doesn’t want to fall in line?”

He chuckled lowly, the sound deep and quiet. “Then I wait until they do. Or I make them see why it’s better to walk beside me than against me.”

She turned back to the window, hiding the ghost of a smile. “Arrogant, aren’t you?”

“Confident,” he corrected smoothly.

The road stretched ahead, lined with ancient trees and sandstone walls.

The air around them felt heavier, not with tension, but with something charged. He finally spoke again, voice quieter this time.

“I told you once, and you gave in. You didn't insist on where I was taking you.”

“I figured if I ask, you won’t answer,” she said dryly.

He chuckled again, and this time it reached his eyes. “You’re not wrong.”

The conversation drifted for a moment before Arisha asked softly, “Why me?”

Yugant’s hands tightened subtly on the steering wheel, but his tone remained calm. “Because when everyone bowed, you didn’t.”

That silenced her. She looked out the window, the world blurring past but her thoughts lingered on his words.

A few minutes later, the car turned off the main road and entered a private estate.. serene, surrounded by golden fields and a view that stretched endlessly.

Arisha frowned slightly. “What is this place?”

Yugant parked the car, cut the engine, and turned toward her. “My retreat. Away from the palace. Away from expectations.”

His voice dropped a note lower. “And today, it’s just for you.”

The moment Arisha stepped out of the car, a gentle desert breeze kissed her face, carrying with it the scent of sandalwood and wild jasmine.

Before her stood a breathtaking estate,  not grand like the palace, but elegant and serene.

It had a charm of its own: white sandstone walls, intricate jaali windows, and a small garden blooming with marigolds and roses.

The silence around it wasn’t empty.. it was peaceful.

Arisha glanced at Yugant as he came around the car, his sleeves rolled up, his posture relaxed, different from the commanding figure she’d seen at the palace. Here, he looked… human.

“This doesn’t look like a king’s place,” she murmured, walking beside him as he led her through the garden path.

“That’s because it isn’t,” he replied simply. “This is mine, not Rana Sa’s. Just Yugant’s.”

His voice held something quiet, honest.

For a brief second, she caught a glimpse of the man behind the crown, the one who hid his wounds under power and silence.

Inside, the house was minimal yet refined. A wide glass wall overlooked a courtyard pond where lilies floated lazily. Books lined one corner, while in another, sketches and plans of old palaces rested half-finished.

Arisha’s steps slowed as she took it all in. “You draw?”

He nodded slightly. “Only when I can’t sleep.”

Her brows lifted. “And how often is that?”

He smirked faintly. “Often enough to fill these walls.”

They walked further until they reached the backyard, an open terrace overlooking the dunes.

A small table was set under a canopy, laid with fresh fruits, coffee, and her favorite snacks, the very ones he had ordered last night.

Her eyes widened. “You did this?”

He shrugged lightly, his gaze unreadable. “I told you, I don’t want my wife to lack anything.”

She crossed her arms, tilting her head. “And you think buying my favorites is enough to impress me?”

He met her gaze steadily. “I’m not trying to impress you, Arisha. I’m trying to understand you.”

For the first time since their marriage, his tone wasn’t commanding, it was sincere.

Something shifted in her chest, a feeling she quickly masked with her usual poise.

He gestured toward the table. “Eat something. You didn’t touch breakfast.”

“Maybe I wasn’t hungry,” she replied softly.

He leaned slightly closer, his voice dropping low. “You weren’t comfortable.”

Her lips parted, caught off guard. He wasn’t wrong.

Without saying more, she took a seat, and he joined her. The silence that followed wasn’t awkward; it was steady, like they were slowly learning each other’s rhythm.

For the first time, it didn’t feel like a war between them. It felt like a pause.

I stood there, my gaze fixed on him as he leaned against the wooden railing, the golden sunlight falling across his sharp features.

The calm wind carried his words before I could even process them, words that didn’t sound like the man I had fought against for so long.

“I didn’t marry you for revenge,” Yugant said quietly, his eyes tracing the horizon.

“Not for power, not for control. I married you because…” He paused, searching for the right words, “…because for the first time, someone made me lose my sense of control and that terrified me.”

I blinked, trying to read his expression, but there was nothing to read. His tone was calm, his face still, yet there was a storm behind those eyes.

He continued, “You were never afraid to stand against me. You challenged me, questioned me, you made me see myself in ways I didn’t want to. You made me feel.”

I swallowed, unsure if I wanted to hear more. “So you married me… because I challenged you?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

His lips curved into the faintest smirk. “No. Because you made me want to stop fighting.”

My chest tightened, a mix of confusion, disbelief, and something dangerously close to warmth. But before I could stop myself, the question slipped out.

“Do you… love me?”

He turned his head then, looking directly at me. His eyes steady, dark, unflinching met mine.

“I don’t know,” he admitted, his voice rough with truth. “Maybe I don’t understand love the way others do. I only know that you are mine.”

I rolled my eyes, masking the flutter in my chest. “There you go again with your possession talk. You can’t just claim people, Yugant.”

A faint chuckle escaped him. “Maybe not. But I can try to protect what’s mine.”

Before I could retort, his tone deepened and when he spoke again, it wasn’t the king talking. It was the man.

“Arisha…” he said softly, taking a step closer, “would you give me a chance?”

My breath caught. “Chance… for what?”

“To pamper you. To care for you the way I’ve never cared for anyone.” His voice trembled, barely noticeable, but it did. “If you ask me to, I’ll leave everything behind. The crown, the throne, I’ll walk away from it all.”

I froze. He wasn’t joking. For the first time, I saw the cracks in his armor, the sincerity beneath his arrogance.

“I had never felt like this for someone before,” he murmured, eyes locked with mine. “You confuse me, infuriate me… but you also calm something in me I didn’t know existed.”

For a long moment, neither of us spoke. The world around us faded, the sound of birds, the rustle of wind.. all drowned in the silence between us.

And for the first time, I didn’t know whether to step back… or closer.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

I looked away, afraid that if I kept meeting his gaze, I’d lose the fight I had promised myself to keep.

“You say all these things,” I whispered, “but you don’t understand what they mean. You talk about pampering, about giving up everything, but love isn’t about surrendering, Yugant. It’s about understanding.”

He stepped closer, his presence pulling me in like gravity. “Then let me understand you,” he said softly. “Let me try.”

I turned sharply, trying to hide the sudden rush of emotion that clawed its way up my throat. “You make it sound so easy.”

“Maybe it can be,” he murmured.

I laughed.. a low, shaky sound. “You don’t even realise what you’re asking for. I’m not some delicate thing you can hold and protect. I fight. I bite back. I don’t bend easily.”

“I know,” he said. “And that’s exactly why I can’t walk away.”

His voice had that quiet conviction again, the kind that made people believe him. For the first time, it wasn’t authority, it was honesty.

I turned to look at him, and the sincerity in his eyes hit harder than I expected. I wanted to say something sharp, something that would push him away, but the words just… wouldn’t come.

Instead, I whispered, “Why me?”

He smiled faintly, not arrogantly, but like a man who finally understood his own heart.

“Because even when you stand against me, I feel you’re the only one who truly sees me. You never feared my power,  you challenged it. And somewhere between our fight, you became a part of me I can’t let go.”

My heart ached in ways I didn’t want to acknowledge. His voice, his words, they carried weight.

For a few moments, we stood there, both trapped in the mess we’d created. The silence stretched between us, heavy but strangely comforting.

Finally, I sighed, brushing a loose strand of hair from my face. “Yugant, I don’t know what this is between us. But if you want a chance… you’ll have to earn it.”

His lips lifted in a small, knowing smile. “Then I’ll start now.”

Something fluttered inside me, an emotion I didn’t want to name. I turned away before he could see it, pretending to focus on the distant garden.

Maybe… just maybe… this battle wasn’t meant to be fought.

But then I turned back to him, my eyes narrowed, a mixture of curiosity and skepticism,

“Yugant… tell me something. Why did you plan all this? I mean, we met for the first time at Angel’s home. The fight, the challenges… that all happened just yesterday before our marriage. So why… why did you want to marry me?”

He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his gaze softened, and he studied me as though weighing his words carefully.

“Do you really want the truth?” he asked, his voice low and deliberate.

I nodded, though my heartbeat quickened.

“It started the moment I saw your photograph,” he admitted. “There was something in your eyes - a fire, a defiance, and yet… an innocence. I didn’t know it then, but I knew I couldn’t let you go. I decided… you would be mine.”

I blinked, taken aback. “You… decided? Just like that? Because of a photograph?”

He shrugged faintly, a small smirk tugging at his lips.

“It wasn’t just the photograph. It was everything about you, the way you stand, the way you challenge, the way you make me… unsettled. I’ve never met anyone like you. And I knew… I couldn’t let you slip through my hands.”

I frowned, a hint of challenge returning to my voice. “So it’s for my beauty? Just because I looked good in a photograph, you wanted to marry me?”

He shook his head sharply, his expression serious now.

“No. It’s not just beauty. You’re more than that. But even if… even if you weren’t beautiful in the future, it wouldn’t matter. I would still want you. Because it’s not your face that captivated me… it’s your spirit. The fire inside you. That’s what made me claim you as mine.”

My breath caught, and for the first time, I saw a glimpse of the man behind the king, the one who felt, who dared to admit his desires and fears.

I wanted to roll my eyes, to hide the flinch his words caused, but something in me softened.

“Yugant…” I murmured, letting the name slip, tasting it in a way I hadn’t before.

His gaze didn’t waver. “Arisha, I don’t care about appearances. I care about you. That’s why I married you. That’s why… I’ll protect you, no matter what.”

I looked away, the wind brushing against my face, hiding the sudden warmth rising in my chest. For a moment, words failed me. He had crossed every boundary of arrogance and command, and yet here he was.. exposing something raw and unshielded.

“Do you… always plan everything like this?” I asked softly, trying to keep my voice steady.

He smirked, just a little. “Only the important things.”

I couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped me. “And marrying me… that was one of the important things?”

“Most important,” he replied without hesitation, and the calm certainty in his voice made my chest tighten.
